Citizens Launch Petition Against Kenora Casino Proposal

Seven years after approval by the city, residents petition against new casino in Kenora, Ontario. The city of Kenora has come a very long way over the years. For centuries, it served as a merchant port under the rules of various European nations. When it was incorporated as a trading post by France in 1882, it was called Portage-aux-Rats, or Rats Portage, meaning exactly what it sounds like. In 1905, it gained the more respectable title of Kenora, and the city has steadily flourished since. By 2012, the city had swelled so much that it drew the attention of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG). Provincial regulators thought it was about time Kenora received its own small casino establishment, complete with 300 slot machines that would create an estimated 90 jobs in the community, and generate up to $6 million in revenue for the coffers of the municipality. The … Continue reading

No More Credit Card Gambling for New Zealanders

New Zealand bans credit card casino deposits ahead of SkyCity Auckland’s online launch from Malta. New Zealand‘s approach to online gambling regulation has been has been one of uncertainty. The island nation has been on the fence over the matter for years. They’re still hosting political debates in an attempt to determine how best to regulate the industry. One thing they know for certain is that they do not want unlicensed offshore companies – too many of which have defrauded NZ players in the past – infiltrating their market once the proper laws are in place Those who obtain an NZ license would be required to abide by the strict rules of the jurisdiction. Of course, coming up with those rules, scripting legislation that will benefit the government while protecting the people, is what’s been holding them back all this time. And as that lengthy legislation isn’t expected to be … Continue reading

Canada Casino Growth a Societal Boon or Bane?

Weighing the cost of expansion in live and online gambling in Canada. It’s rather phenomenal how fast the online gambling industry has expanded in just two decades time. Like a sports car spinning 0 to 60 in two seconds flat, iGaming went from one of the world’s least trusted industries in the late 1990’s, to the world’s second most profitable eCommerce (behind adult entertainment, of course). It was an industry with fantastic potential, giving gambling enthusiasts all over the world an opportunity to partake in the same casino games they know and love in land-based gaming halls, via desktop computers and, eventually, mobile smartphones and tablet devices. All it needed was the right level of security and regulation, and the rest was history. Expansion of Live and Online Gambling in Canada a Societal Boon or Bane? Gambling isn’t your average sort of eCommerce. Where auction sites like eBay and online … Continue reading

More Casino Rama Employees Cut by Gateway

Gateway continues to pass out pink slips in mass of Casino Rama lay-offs. On Thursday, July 19, precisely one year after Gateway Casinos & Entertainment took over the day to day managerial operations of Casino Rama in Orillia, Ontario, the company announced the dismissal of 70 employees from its payroll. The fact that Gateway waited 365 days is telling, as that is the exact amount of time the company agreed not to alter the staff when taking over the casino from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp (OLG). The very first day Gateway was allowed to pass out pink slips, they did. A total of 65 full-time, unionized employees, and 5 part-timers were eliminated from the pay roll that day. Those with the longest tenure were bought out (or in Gateway’s words, took advantage of a “voluntary exit incentive program”), others were reassigned, and the rest were simply fired. An … Continue reading

Great Canadian Gaming sells Great American Casinos

GCG pins focus on Canada, sells Washington casinos for $56 million. Established in 1982, Great Canadian Gaming (GCG) has long since strived to be just that – Canada’s greatest gaming corporation. More than two dozen casinos later, GCG accomplished that goal long ago, now standing tall alongside Gateway Casinos & Entertainment as the only dominant commercial casino competitors in the Great White North. What many visitors of their multitude of properties across British Columbia, Ontario and the Atlantic provinces may not realize is that, despite its region-bearing name, Great Canadian Gaming also operates a few gambling establishments to the south. That’s because the company launched those operations under a subsidiary branch, aptly titled Great American Casinos (GAC). After shutting down one of those operations less than two years ago, the Coquitlam-based corporation has decided its American investments are no longer worthy of pursuit. The latest financial headlines indicate GCG is … Continue reading

South Huron Council Picks Grand Bend Casino Location

City selects Grand Bend as best location for Gateway’s new casino in South Huron, Ontario. Building a new casino in Ontario is no easy task. Forget the cost or the labor involved. In the time it takes to get from, ‘Hey, wanna build a casino?‘, to ‘Welcome to our grand opening!‘, you could have a child and send it to college! We’re still in the infantile stages of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp‘s (OLG) desire to build a gambling facility in South Huron, which is all the more impressive since it’s likely that a destination for the casino has already been chosen. But there still may be a very, very long road ahead. Discontent from neighboring communities could be the first hurdle in moving forward. With that said, it’s been confirmed that a majority vote by South Huron City Council has pin pointed a preferred location for the upcoming … Continue reading

Gateway Throws in the Towel on Western Fair Casino

No casino at Western Fair District; Gateway buys property on Wonderland Road for new London casino. In December 2016, seventeen long years after the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp (OLG) first began leasing the construct that houses slot machines at London’s Western Fair District, Gateway Casinos & Entertainment became the proud new manager of the now-two-decades old gaming facility. At that time, it was believed that Gateway would expand the property, building a full-fledged casino, along with the hotel and additional dining options. Two years later, it’s finally been determined that Gateway will not get such an opportunity. There will be no casino at Western Fair District. Negotiations between Gateway, London, WFD owners, and OLG—which have moved along at a snails pace at best for more than a year—have officially ended. With no affable lease agreement in sight, Gateway casinos has confirmed the acquisition of a property along Wonderland Road … Continue reading

Odds of Casino in Victoria, BC getting Slim

Helps no help for supporters of more casino gambling in Victoria. In 2015, Victoria, British Columbia seemed like the perfect place to build a new casino. The provincial capital already had one gambling destination just outside of town. Being such a populace city, there was easily room for two. With the majority of city officials on board, they submitted their interest to the BC Lottery Corp, and in 2016, Victoria was selected as the prime location for the new gaming facility. The odds of a casino in Victoria were high. Everyone praised the decision—except perhaps the owners of the casino in nearby View Royal. Mayor Lisa Helps led the pack of supporters, calling it “a win for everyone”. More recently, however, her mood has flipped entirely. No More ‘Helps’ for Casino Gambling in Victoria Last month, BCLC sent a letter to Victoria City Council stating that they’re ready to move … Continue reading
