BC gambling corp’s CFO Amanda Hobson named Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada.
It’s not hard to be a powerful woman in today’s business world. In fact, it’s almost a static requirement for success these days. But to be among the Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada? Now, that’s something special!
That very honor was bestowed upon Amanda Hobson earlier this week. Mrs. Hobson is the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Finance and Corporate Services for the British Columbia Lottery Corp (BCLC); the Crown Corporation in charge of regulating all gambling-related activities in the province.

The Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada awards are organized each year by the Women’s Executive Network (WXN). The group’s primary focal points are “the advancement, development and recognition of professional women in Canada”, with the passionate goal of “empowering women and creating positive social change”.
Every year, WXN scours its membership database for the nation’s most influential businesswomen. Amanda Hobson was an easy choice in the PwC Public Sector category. She’s got more than two decades worth of diverse experience in the financial spectrum, having worked in domestic and international private, public and public sector organizations since 1997.
For the first two years of her professional employment—as a Senior Accountant with financial consulting firm Deloitte—Hobson was still wrapping up a BComm / Commerce degree at University of Victoria. Now, she’s heading up the financial sector of British Columbia’s most influential gaming corporation.
This isn’t Amanda Hobson’s first time in the spotlight, either. In 2017, she was bestowed the title of British Columbia’s CFO of the Year in the Emerging Leaders category by Business in Vancouver and CPABC. She attributes her success to passion being the centrifugal force behind all that she does.
Helping to empowering young women is one of those things she’s remained passionate about throughout all of her professional years. Two months ago, she was the headliner among a small group of key speakers at Horizon Recruitment‘s special Career Café event, featuring Women in Finance & Accounting. Next week, she’ll be speaking at the 14th edition of the FCI-CWI Women in Leadership Conference in Vancouver.

Holding any ‘Chief’ position in a major corporation would take up the vast majority of anyone’s weekday. But that hasn’t stopped Mrs. Hobson from volunteering her time and energy to other verticals she feels equally passionate about.
Amanda has held the volunteer position as Director of the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation since February 2018. She’s also been a regular community volunteer at the Kamploops Food Bank since March 2017. Her dedication to helping others ties in directly with one of the most important life lessons Hobson says she learned early on; that everyone deserves equal respect, regardless of station.
“It is important to treat everyone with respect, whether it is the janitor or the board chair,” she told WXN officials upon accepting her Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada award.
When asked how she feels about being described as a powerful woman, Hobson said, “It makes me feel like I can do anything I set my mind to.” If given the opportunity to go back in time and advise her younger self, she would say, “Passion, patience and perseverance get you everywhere.”
