Viking themed online slots games are all the rage these days. Every software company has one – if not far more than one – in its portfolio. Betsoft released its first, Viking Age, back in 2012. After seven long years, it was time for a new addition. Enter stage right – the all new Viking Voyage Slot.
There’s no real plot behind the game. It doesn’t offer the immersion or enthrallment of major story-based titles, like Gonzo’s Quest or Jack and the Beanstalk from NetEnt, nor does it provide the unparalleled munificence of progressive jackpot games like the Mega Moolah network from Microgaming. Viking Voyage is a 5 reel video slot that pays all ways from left to right. It’s built in HTML5 for optimal performance on all desktop and mobile devices and operating systems, and delivers an average RTP of 96.12%.
Let’s talk about the game’s main characters for a moment. The golden Viking Warrior King is the head honcho, and the game’s wild. While he appears strong and brave and ready to bash his way through a brick wall, his trusted companions are – well – not so impressive. There’s the long-faced red-headed viking, who has a perpetual look of “Duh…” Then there’s the pint-sized, brown-haired viking, who’s helmet is too big for his head, blinding him from potential combat. And then we have the oldest of the bunch, who looks more like the aging town drunkard than a warrior worthy of his spear.
This doesn’t exactly bode well for the imagined adventure at hand, but I don’t think Betsoft’s creators were thinking that far ahead. They picked a theme (Viking), and character type (comical cartoon), tossed some features into the pot (free spins, scatters), and stirred it all up. What the pot spit out was Viking Voyage. I’m not saying it’s a terrible game, it just seems to lack forethought on the creator’s part.
Those who followed its creation since the original teaser videos and creatives might have noticed that there was supposed to be a female character as well. A young blonde, she didn’t appear old enough to be out of grade school yet, but possessed the wisest face in the group. Her character was apparently omitted prior to release. The backdrop colors differentiating the low-end and high-end symbols were also reversed.
Viking Voyage Slot Features
This is where the game gets more attractive. Odin’s Raven is the scatter, awarding scatter pays when 3, 4 or 5 appear. Amazingly, the Wild Viking King substitutes for all standard symbols, AND the Raven Scatter! If 1 or more scatters appear and enough Wilds to make 3+ combined, scatters pays are awarded.
The Wild also spins stacked on the reels. Whenever three wilds stack on a single reel, it combines into one 3-tall Viking King Wild. Any corresponding wins are paid, followed by a Free Re-Spin with the wild remaining in place.
The Long Boat is the Bonus symbol, appearing only on reels 1 and 5. When the boat lands on both reels 1 and 5, 10 Free Spins are awarded. During free games, all wins are paid with a 3x multiplier.
