The Black Bear Casino Resort near Carlton, Minnesota has been cooking up special poker tournaments, table gaming promotions and hotel packages for years now, but its latest endeavor in home economics is most assuredly one for the record books. On Sunday, September 2, these guys grilled up the world’s largest bacon cheeseburger, complete with traditional toppings, that weighed in at over one ton.
Gamblers packed the Bear Creek Casino last weekend and, in some regard, it was business as usual. The poker tables were packed, the slots reels spun, chips flew at the blackjack rounds and bingo enthusiasts were taking full advantage the casino’s blue light specials, but players were certainly a bit distracted by something that Sunday – a smell that can grab the attention, and strike the appetite, of the best of us – the lovely aroma of bacon. Sixty pounds (27 kg) of it to be exact, sizzling atop a record breaking cheeseburger that took four hours and crane to prepare.
The Guinness famed cheeseburger measured a whopping 10 feet (3 meters) in diameter and tipped an industrial strength scale at 2,014 pounds (914 kg).
Phillip Robertson, a represented of the Guinness Book of World Records, was on hand to verify and document the occasion. When all was said and done, he told a reporter from the Duluth News Tribune, “What I saw today was a feat of remarkable teamwork that resulted in a world record burger that actually tastes really good.”
The previous record for the world’s largest cheeseburger was a diminutive fraction of Sunday’s incredible feat, weighing only 881 pounds (400 kg). The team at Bear Creek Casino made sure to top it; a double entendre of colossal proportions. The mammoth bacon cheeseburger carried 50 pounds (23 kg) of sliced onions (oh, the tears that must have been shed), another 50 pounds (23 kg) of shredded lettuce, 40 pounds (18 kg) of American cheese and 40 more pounds (18 kg) of pickles.
The burger was grilled in a specially designed outdoor oven. Halfway through the cooking process, the behemoth burger of course had to be flipped, but the team was undaunted. They came fully prepared, using a construction crane to flip it. It took nearly twice as long as long to bake the buns, 7 hours in fact, but again, these guys are professionals and had them ready to go when the burger was finally done.
The sizeable crowd that amassed outside the casino was treated to a free meal that day as they sliced up the bacon cheeseburger and passed it out to all in attendance.
The Bear Creek Casino Resort is located just outside of Carlton, Minnesota, a 3 hour drive from the border of Ontario, Canada. The world record bacon cheeseburger cook-off last Sunday was merely the start of a new calendar page of month-long promotions at the gambling hall. The campaign will include special bingo games and reduced prices, extended comp earnings and free buffet meals to active card holders, but no more 1-ton cheeseburgers are likely to grace the menu for many years to come.
