Horse race betting is one of the oldest, most beloved forms of gambling around the world. In Canada, horse racing tracks are fairly common, but unless you’re lucky enough to live nearby, most bettors have to travel a good distance to experience live racing. In Alberta, only two tracks exist, but that’s about to change as Century Casinos was selected to build the provinces third horse track.
After the painstaking process of weeding through applications, regulators in Alberta have selected Century Casinos as the proud owner of a $50 million contract to establish a new horse track just south of Edmonton. According to CBC News, the chosen name for the facility is Century Mile, denoting the Century Casinos brand, as well as the size of the one-mile oval track to be built.
The location has already been settled upon. The company will erect the new, live horse race betting venue upon a 105-acre plot of land in Leduc County. It’s position near Edmonton International Airport should help bring in more foot traffic from out of town visitors – unlike the city’s existing track, Horse Racing Alberta, which is located in the very heart of Edmonton, some 30km to the north.
The planning stages are still being hammered out, according to a spokesperson who gave a statement to CBC News this week. While the issuance of the contract has been confirmed, a timeline for the completion of Century Mile is still in question.
The spokesman said that it could take 18 months to complete the facility. If construction is able to get underway by Spring 2017, said the spokesman, the new horse racing venue is projected to hold its grand opening sometime in Fall 2018.
Big Step For Canada Horse Racing
This will mark Century Casino’s second racetrack in Alberta. Last year, the operator opened Century Downs Racetrack and Casino, around 250km south of Edmonton, in Rocky View County north of Calgary. That horse racing track provides a 5/8-mile course.
Canada horse racing may not be too hard to come by, but this new track, once completed, will be the only mile-long oval track anywhere in Western Canada.
Like its southern counterpart, Century Mile will also feature a casino. Century Casinos’ spokesperson, Paul Ryneveld, said the gaming floor would be capable of accommodating 1,100 slot machines, as well as a lounge area, full restaurant and additional concessions.
His enthusiasm towards the new project was evident. “It’s very big for us — for Century,” Ryneveld told the rpess. “And we also feel it’s a big move for the horse racing industry in Alberta.”
